The Intelligent Pulley

Australian designed and made.

For use with I.B.M. and compatible computers. The Intelligent Pulley can be mounted on an airtrack, attached to a dynamics trolley or simply moved backwards and forwards to generate position vs time and velocity vs time graphs in real time.

Four programs are available to do experiments in:

 Uniform Motion
 Non-uniform Motion
 Newton's Laws of Motion

Easy to use software for Windows '95, '98 and NT

 Integrated Excel compatible spreadsheet.

Save data in text or Excel 5 format.

Easily transfer your data to you favourite spreadsheet.

Comprehensive Help and worksheets at the click of a button.

Customisable Graphs - change between 2D and 3D, rotate, select axes scales etc.

Using The Intelligent Pulley

The most common cause of ambiguous or incorrect results is caused by allowing the Intelligent Pulley to turn before the experiment has commenced. Once you have clicked the Do Experiment button timing will commence when the pulley rotates by only several degrees. If after clicking this button the Pulley rotates and is then released your results will be incorrect. I have observed this many times with my own students while performing the Newton's Second Law experiment. One will hold the glider while another will control the computer. If the student holding the glider allows it to move backward and forward it will trigger the timing before the glider has actually been released and the value for acceleration will be incorrect.

Using The Physics Computerlab.

Obtaining good results for the Collisions Option requires a bit of practice and patience. Before doing these experiments I spend some time adjusting our linear airtrack until I can confidently get reliable results. The separation of the timing gates is critical. Always ensure that the gates are far enough apart that any spring attached to the gliders has fully expanded before the gliders enter the gates i.e. the gliders are not accelerating while timing occurs.

In the Windows software I have found the mass entry boxes to be confusing when using different masses for collisions and have changed the software to show mass in the same table as velocity and momentum. You can upgrade your software to take advantage of this feature (see below).
